Costa Rica has many fishing destinations, boat styles and species, so the best charter for one group may not be the best choice for another.

How much does a fishing charter cost in Costa Rica?
Prices vary by destination, boat size, trip duration and whether you are fishing inshore or offshore. Smaller boats generally cost less, while larger sportfishing boats with cabins, air conditioning and additional amenities cost more.

How far in advance should I book a Costa Rica fishing charter?
For peak fishing months, holidays and popular tournament periods, booking early gives you a better selection of boats. If your dates are flexible, last-minute options can sometimes be available.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
A deposit is normally required to secure a private charter. The exact amount and payment instructions are provided when we confirm your boat and fishing date.
Are fishing charters private?
The charters we arrange are private for your group unless a different arrangement is specifically discussed. You are not normally placed on a boat with unrelated anglers.
How long is a fishing trip?
Half-day trips are generally around four to five hours. Full-day trips are commonly around eight hours. Multi-day and overnight fishing trips are also available for certain destinations and offshore fishing styles.
Should I book a half day or full day?
A half day can work very well for inshore fishing, families or anglers who want a shorter trip. For offshore fishing, especially when targeting sailfish, marlin or tuna, a full day normally gives the captain more time to reach productive water and locate fish.
Are tips included in the charter price?
Crew gratuity is normally separate. A tip is a way to recognize the captain and mate for their preparation, service and work throughout the day.
Can I book more than one day of fishing?
Yes. Many anglers book multiple days, especially when targeting several species or combining offshore and inshore fishing.

Species & Seasons
Costa Rica fishes year-round, but species patterns change through the year.
What is the best time of year to fish in Costa Rica?
There is productive fishing throughout the year. The best month depends more on the species and destination than on one single “best season.”

When is sailfish season in Costa Rica?
The Central Pacific is especially well known for sailfish during the dry-season months, although sailfish can be encountered outside the traditional peak as well.
When is the best time for marlin?
Marlin opportunities vary by region and fishing style. Costa Rica offers blue, black and striped marlin opportunities, and dedicated FAD and seamount trips can provide a very different marlin experience from traditional day-charter fishing.
When can we catch yellowfin tuna?
Yellowfin tuna are available during much of the year and are often found offshore around dolphins, bait concentrations and productive blue-water areas.
When is the best time for mahi-mahi?
Mahi-mahi, also called dorado, can be encountered offshore during much of the year, with changing abundance depending on currents, floating debris, bait and seasonal ocean conditions.
Can you catch roosterfish year-round?
Roosterfish can be targeted throughout the year in Costa Rica. They are an inshore species commonly associated with rocky coastline, bait schools, points and structure.
Is fishing good during Costa Rica’s rainy or green season?
Yes. The green season does not mean fishing stops. Tuna, mahi-mahi, marlin, roosterfish, snapper and other species can provide excellent opportunities depending on location and conditions.
Does a full moon affect fishing?
Moon phase can influence bait movement and feeding patterns, but it is only one of many factors. Currents, water temperature, bait, weather and recent fishing activity are also important.
Inshore, Offshore & Boats
Choosing the right trip is often more important than simply choosing the biggest boat.
What is the difference between inshore and offshore fishing?
Inshore fishing stays closer to the coastline and targets species such as roosterfish, snapper, snook and jacks. Offshore fishing heads into deeper blue water for sailfish, marlin, yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi.

How far offshore do you fish?
Distance changes daily depending on currents, water color, bait and recent fish activity. Offshore boats may travel many miles to find productive blue water, which is one reason a full day is generally preferable for serious offshore fishing.
What fish can we catch inshore?
Common inshore targets include roosterfish, snapper, snook, jack crevalle, grouper, amberjack and other species associated with rocks, reefs, points and coastal structure.
What fish can we catch offshore?
Offshore targets include Pacific sailfish, blue and other marlin species, yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi and occasionally wahoo.
What size fishing boat should I choose?
Boat size should depend on group size, fishing style, budget and comfort requirements. Smaller center consoles can be excellent for inshore fishing, while larger sportfishers provide more space, shade, cabins and amenities for offshore days.
Do fishing boats have bathrooms?
Many larger sportfishing boats have enclosed marine heads. Smaller center consoles may have limited facilities, so ask us if a private bathroom is important for your group.
Do any boats have air conditioning?
Yes. Some larger sportfishing boats have air-conditioned cabins. If air conditioning is important for children, family members or your group’s comfort, tell us before we recommend boats.
What is FAD fishing in Costa Rica?
FAD and seamount fishing takes anglers much farther offshore to areas known for blue-marlin activity. These trips are very different from a normal day charter and often involve overnight or multi-day fishing.

What’s Included & Gear
What you need to bring and what the charter normally handles.
What is included on a Costa Rica fishing charter?
Most private charters include the captain and mate, conventional fishing tackle, bait, water, sodas, fruit and snacks. Full-day boats commonly include lunch, and many charters also provide beer.
Exact inclusions can vary by boat, so your charter confirmation should list what is included.
Is fishing tackle included?
Yes. Standard conventional tackle appropriate for the charter’s fishing style is normally provided onboard.
Do you provide fly-fishing equipment?
We recommend that fly anglers bring their own fly rods, reels, lines, leaders, flies and other preferred fly-fishing equipment. Standard conventional fishing tackle is provided on our charters.
Can I bring my own rods and tackle?
Yes. Experienced anglers are welcome to bring personal equipment. Let us know in advance so we can make sure your gear is appropriate for the species and fishing style you are planning.
Is lunch included?
Lunch is commonly included on full-day charters. Half-day trips normally include lighter snacks and drinks rather than a full lunch.
Can the crew clean fish we keep?
For legal table fish that may be retained, the crew can normally clean the catch for you. Billfish and other protected sport species are released.
Licenses & Conservation
A few important details before you step aboard.
Do I need a fishing license in Costa Rica?
Anglers fishing from a charter boat generally need the appropriate Costa Rica sportfishing license.
We recommend arranging it before departure so you are ready when you arrive at the boat.
Does every angler need a fishing license?
License requirements apply to anglers rather than simply to the boat. We can give you current instructions before your charter.
Do you release sailfish and marlin?
Yes. Sailfish and marlin are treated as catch-and-release sportfish. The goal is a healthy release after the fight and photos when conditions allow.
Can we keep tuna or mahi-mahi?
Legal food species such as yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi may be retained when appropriate. Your captain can advise you about the catch that day.
Do you release roosterfish?
Roosterfish are prized primarily as a sportfish and we recommend releasing them so they can continue supporting Costa Rica’s inshore fishery.
Weather, Families & Beginners
Fishing in Costa Rica is not only for experienced anglers.
What happens if it rains?
Rain by itself does not automatically cancel a fishing charter. Costa Rica’s green season often includes rain while still providing productive fishing conditions.
What happens if the ocean is unsafe?
The captain has final responsibility for safe operation of the vessel. If conditions are considered unsafe, the trip may need to be adjusted, rescheduled or canceled according to the applicable charter policy.
Is Costa Rica fishing good for beginners?
Absolutely. The captain and mate can handle rigging, baiting and technique, then help you through the fight when a fish is hooked.

Can children go on a fishing charter?
Yes. Families fish with us regularly. The best trip depends on children’s ages, experience and comfort on the ocean. For younger children, a shorter inshore trip is often easier than a long offshore day.
Can someone come along even if they do not fish?
Yes, provided the boat has capacity. Larger boats with shade, seating, cabins and bathrooms are often more comfortable for family members who are joining mainly for the experience.
What should I take for seasickness?
If you are prone to motion sickness, discuss appropriate preventative medication with your physician or pharmacist before the trip. It generally works better when taken before symptoms begin.

A few details make the morning of your trip much easier.
Where do Jaco fishing charters depart from?
Departure locations depend on the specific boat. Some Jaco-area boats operate from Herradura Bay while others are based at nearby marina facilities. Your confirmation will include the exact meeting point.

Can you arrange transportation from my hotel?
Transportation can often be arranged from hotels and vacation rentals. Tell us where you are staying when you request your charter so we can help with logistics.
Should I stay in Jaco or Los Sueños?
Both locations work well for Central Pacific fishing. Jaco has a larger selection of restaurants, nightlife and vacation rentals, while Los Sueños offers a resort and marina environment very close to many charter boats.
What should I wear on a fishing charter?
Lightweight sun-protective clothing, a hat, polarized sunglasses and non-marking shoes are good choices. A light rain jacket is useful during the green season.
What should I bring?
Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, any personal medication, your phone or camera and anything else you personally need during the day. If you have your own favorite fishing equipment, ask us whether it makes sense to bring it.
Can I fish from Quepos or Manuel Antonio instead?
Yes. Quepos and Marina Pez Vela are major Costa Rica sportfishing destinations and can be an excellent option for travelers staying near Manuel Antonio.

Can I fish from Guanacaste instead of traveling to Jaco?
Yes. Travelers staying in Guanacaste can often fish much closer to their resort rather than driving several hours to the Central Pacific. Options are available around Tamarindo and other North Pacific areas.
