Frequently Asked Questions

Costa Rica stands out as a country dedicated to environmental preservation. It actively enforces stringent laws against practices like trawling and other forms of commercial fishing. This commitment to protecting its marine ecosystems makes Costa Rica an exceptional destination for travelers and fishermen, offering them a unique opportunity to test their angling skills while supporting conservation efforts.

Booking a fishing charter typically costs around USD 700, although prices can fluctuate. In specific locations, you might need to venture further offshore to target species like marlin, sailfish, and tuna, which may require an additional fee. For instance, a 28-foot charter can be secured for $950 for a full day, while a 36-foot vessel may cost $1700, with larger boats priced accordingly.

The consensus among seasoned captains is that Costa Rica provides exceptional fishing opportunities from January to April. During this period, marlin, sailfish, and tuna tend to be closer to the bay. However, thanks to its steadfast environmental protection policies, fishing in Costa Rica remains favorable throughout the year.

Though small in size, Costa Rica offers a diverse range of fishing opportunities. From river fishing to deep-sea adventures, anglers can choose from various techniques, including fly fishing, trolling, deep-sea fishing, surf fishing, and many more.

The choice of boat size depends on several factors. Families with children may prefer larger vessels, such as those ranging from 35ft to 45ft charters. Additionally, the boat size you select is influenced by the type of fishing you intend to pursue. Smaller boats are generally better suited for coastal fisheries, rooster fishing, and targeting species like Snook, often found near rocks and river mouths. However, it’s essential to note that smaller boats may not venture as far offshore for certain types of fishing, which can impact your decision.

In this case, it is best to use a private fishing boat, which will also depend on the number of people; we can say that a 28-foot boat can carry four people, and eight people can fish a 39-foot vessel without a problem.

When planning a fishing excursion, you have various options for trip durations. You can opt for a half-day, full-day, or overnight trip. A half-day trip typically spans around 4 to 5 hours, starting from 7 a.m. and concluding around noon. A full-day adventure lasts approximately 8 to 9 hours, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. For those seeking a more extended fishing experience, overnight trips range from 24 to 72 hours.
