Why Jaco is Costa Rica’s #1 Fishing Destination

Jaco and the nearby Herradura Bay are known as the gateway to the “Marlin Capital of the World.” The deep blue Pacific waters drop off here more quickly than almost anywhere else. This means you spend less time traveling and more time fishing.

Here are the key benefits of fishing in Jaco:

Elite Fleet: You can choose from custom sportfishers and luxury yachts ranging from 28 feet to 60 feet.
Proximity to Los Sueños: You can fish in the same waters as the world’s top billfish tournaments.
Inshore Diversity: The rocky points and underwater volcanic reefs are home to large Roosterfish and Cubera Snapper.
Convenience: It’s just 90 minutes from San Jose (SJO) Airport, which makes it easy for day trips or week-long packages.

Offshore Fishing Charters from Jaco

Offshore is where the magic happens. The Central Pacific is famous for its calm seas and incredible numbers of Sailfish and Marlin. On a full-day trip, you’ll travel 20 to 30 miles out to the “Blue Water.” Here, the current breaks attract large schools of baitfish and the predators that follow them.

Targeted Offshore Species:

Marlin: Blue, Black, and Striped Marlin are present year-round.
Sailfish: Expect high-volume action, especially from December through April.
Yellowfin Tuna: Look for dolphins to locate these “football” sized fighters and “cows” over 200 lbs.
Dorado (Mahi-Mahi): Enjoy explosive strikes and great table fare, particularly during the rainy season.

Inshore Fishing in Jaco and Herradura

You don’t have to go far for a trophy. The coastline around Jaco is a paradise for light-tackle lovers.

Roosterfish: This is the top inshore catch, famous for its distinctive comb and fierce fight.
Snapper: You can target huge Cubera Snapper by the rocks, or catch Red Snapper for a fresh dinner.
Other Species: Grouper, Amberjack, and African Pompano keep things lively and exciting.
Perfect for Families: Shorter trips and calmer waters make inshore fishing great for kids and beginners.
