The Guanacaste area has many different spots to choose from.

South Pacific Area

Large masses of humid tropical forests harbor many unique species of the planet, an abundant marine diversity, the highest peak in the country, an indigenous legacy that holds mysteries as captivating as the Pre-Colombian stone spheres and ancient cultures that still conserve its traditions. These are all part of what the South Pacific region can offer. The South Pacific is a perfect area for those who want a jungle, mountain, or rainforest surrounded by greenery, lush forests, and exotic wildlife.

Central Pacific Area:

Just a few hours away from the capital city is the Central Pacific region, the closest beach area to San Jose. The area offers beach amusement centers and popular places to practice surfing and sport fishing, as well as tropical forests rich in wildlife species and endless stretches of soft sand beaches. In the Pacific lies an island that marks the furthest westward extension of the country, Coco Island is 320 miles southwest of Cabo Blanco. This island was declared a protected area by UNESCO.

Northern Zone Area

This is a land of volcanoes, humidity, cloud forests, waterfalls, and mighty rivers, surrounded by rich vegetation and wildlife. This generosity of nature has facilitated diverse activities for the visitor that include horseback riding, canopy tours, water sports, hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife observation. One of the main attractions is the Arenal Volcano, a perfect cone of 5,307 feet in elevation. At its base, the Arenal Reservoir, an artificial lake of 54 miles in length, constitutes one of the best places in the world to practice windsurfing. Winds here reach 45 miles per hour. The lake is also a great place for boat rides, offering a magnificent view of the Arenal Volcano. Freshwater fishing is at its best here and attracts many fishermen. The volcano and its surrounding forests have a National Park with many trails that allow visitors to explore the area. The Tabacon River is heated by the Arenal Volcano itself, offering visitors naturally heated waters that are therapeutic and relaxing.

Central Valley Area

The Central Valley Region is Costa Rica’s gateway to the world. It offers a wide range of activities and attractions worth exploring. In San Jose’s surrounding areas, typical towns of great scenic beauty and rural landscapes offer a glance of the country, with its tile-roofed houses, large solariums, domestic animals, traditional sugar cane processing farms, and dairies as well as ox carts, one of the leading rural symbols of the country. There are many beautiful options here, offering a touch of old traditions and keeping you close to modern conveniences and the main international airport.
