April 30th Fishing Overview: Jaco and Los Sueños Waters

As we wrap up April here on the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, it’s been an interesting few days on the water, full of excitement, a few surprises, and lots of potential for some great fishing adventures.

First off, let’s talk about the tides: we’ve been seeing significantly higher tides than usual the past few days. These “king tides” have made for some dramatic coastal scenery and a few changes in the fishing patterns. The bigger tidal movements stirred up a lot of bait activity, which is great for attracting gamefish, but it has also made conditions a little less predictable at times. Anglers have had to adjust, but with a little patience and good timing, the rewards have definitely been there.

Fishing Conditions:
Fishing has been a bit irregular recently — some boats are finding steady action, while others have to work a bit harder to find the fish. That said, there’s definitely still plenty of life out there!

• Sailfish are around in decent numbers. Some days we’re seeing multiple shots, and on others it takes a little more running and gunning to find them. When they’re around, the bites are aggressive, and the fish are putting on spectacular aerial shows once hooked up — a true highlight for any offshore angler!
• Yellowfin tuna have been making solid appearances as well. Most of the tuna have been in the 20- to 50-pound range, but there have been reports of some bigger models mixed in, especially around the schools of spinner dolphins. Keep an eye out for birds and surface activity — when you find the dolphins, you’re often right in the middle of the tuna action.
• Mahi mahi (dorado) are also in the mix, though not as thick as they can be later in the year. Still, some nice ones are being picked off, especially around floating debris or weed lines. The ones coming to the boats have been healthy, colorful fish — always a welcome sight and a great bonus to any day’s catch.

Inshore Fishing:
While most of the attention has been offshore, inshore fishing has remained a good option too. The big tides stirred things up along the beaches and river mouths, creating some opportunities for roosterfish and snappers for those willing to target the nearshore structure. If you’re looking for a mix of action, a half-day inshore trip could definitely deliver some great fun.

Looking Ahead:
As we move into May, we expect the conditions to stabilize a bit as the tides normalize. Historically, May brings some very consistent fishing for all three species — sailfish, tuna, and mahi mahi — along with an increase in marlin sightings offshore as we head deeper into the green season.

For anyone thinking about booking a trip soon, now is still a great time to get out there. Just keep in mind that with the bigger tides, timing your departure to work with the tides can make a real difference. Early morning starts are still producing some of the best results.

Final Thoughts:
Even with the slightly unpredictable patterns, the fish are definitely here, and with a good crew and a little persistence, the chances of putting together a great day on the water are high. Between the beautiful conditions, plenty of bait in the water, and those hard-fighting pelagics cruising around, it’s a fantastic time to experience fishing here in Jaco and Los Sueños.
