Manuel Antonio National Park Day Tour – Explore Costa Rica’s Natural Paradise

costa rica manuel antonio national park

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of Costa Rica’s true gems — a place where lush rainforest meets pristine white-sand beaches and abundant wildlife thrives in perfect harmony. Although it’s the smallest national park in Costa Rica, covering just 6.83 km², it offers some of the most extraordinary biodiversity in the country and remains a must-see destination for any nature lover visiting the Central Pacific coast.

The popularity of the park has transformed the surrounding area into a charming coastal haven, with a mix of eco-lodges, boutique hotels, local restaurants, and scenic viewpoints. Yet despite its accessibility, Manuel Antonio still feels wild — a sanctuary where nature reigns supreme.

A Walk Through the Rainforest

Your day begins with a scenic drive from Jaco, Herradura, or Quepos to the park entrance. Upon arrival, your naturalist guide will lead you through the winding jungle trails, pointing out hidden wildlife and explaining the delicate balance of the park’s ecosystems.

As you venture deeper, you’ll hear the calls of howler monkeys echoing through the canopy, the rustle of iguanas among the leaves, and the songs of tropical birds overhead. This intimate encounter with Costa Rica’s rainforest offers unforgettable photo opportunities and a true sense of immersion in nature.

Incredible Wildlife Diversity

Despite its small size, Manuel Antonio is home to an astounding 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds. Among its most beloved residents are the three-toed sloth and Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth, both of which can often be seen lounging in the treetops.

The park also shelters all four monkey species found in Costa Rica — the playful capuchin, the curious squirrel monkey, the powerful howler monkey, and the agile spider monkey. Reptile enthusiasts will find plenty to admire too, from green iguanas and black-tailed iguanas to common basilisks (known as “Jesus Christ lizards” for their ability to run on water).

Other creatures that frequently make appearances include coatis, snakes, frogs, and several species of bats, creating a dynamic environment teeming with life.

Trails and Panoramic Views

The park features well-maintained walking trails suitable for most fitness levels. Along the way, you’ll discover breathtaking ocean viewpoints, hidden coves, and lush tropical vegetation. The trails eventually lead to some of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches, such as Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur — perfect for a refreshing swim or a relaxing rest under the shade of almond trees.
